Spring 2019: Kayla Theel

Civic Engagement has named Kayla Theel the Volunteer of the Semester for Spring 2019. Kayla is a sophomore at Georgia State majoring in Nonprofit Leadership. She has volunteered with Civic Engagement in many capacities including projects at: Safehouse Outreach, Westside Volunteer Corps, Trees Atlanta, Atlanta Community Food Bank, Decatur Campus Gardens and Rustic Pathways.

Not only is Kayla involved in service to the greater Atlanta community but, she seeks to get others involved by serving as president of the Habitat for Humanity GSU Chapter. Kayla has engaged in construction projects, facilitated a dinner and prom for senior citizens, planted and cared for trees and gardens, sorted and packaged food, and worked at wildlife rescue centers abroad. Some of Kayla’s favorite aspects of volunteering include hearing the stories and learning the cultures of the people that she serves. From India to Peru to Atlanta, she has learned a lot about cultures that differ from her Wisconsin upbringing.

Volunteering with Civic Engagement gave Kayla a desire to pursue a career in the nonprofit sector when she graduates. This inspired her to change her major to Nonprofit Leadership. In the future, Kayla hopes to live in Latin America while continuing her nonprofit work. Eventually, she would like to form a nonprofit that will empower and educate women in Latin American countries. She hopes that her organization will one day have a worldwide impact.

Congratulations and thank you, Kayla! We are thankful for your service and very excited to see what the future holds for you.
