Apr 2019: Claire Smith
Civic Engagement has honored Claire Smith as the Volunteer of the Month for April 2019. Claire is a Freshman at Georgia State University majoring in Mathematics with a concentration in managerial science. While at Georgia State, Claire has been involved with Habitat for Humanity at GSU, Citizen Scholars Initiative, Red Cross Club, Honors College Ambassadors, University Assistantship Program, Chinese Club, Math & Stat Club all which make an impact in the Greater Atlanta Community.
As service has always been a part of Claire’s life, she has volunteered in activities since she was little either through her church or school, but I really started getting into service at Georgia State, mainly through Habitat for Humanity. Claire is a firm believer that all the small things add up to make a change. The service projects she has participated in, like Brush with Kindness, GSU Cares, and other various nature projects have each played a part in fostering a sense of community not only within the group of volunteers but with each person and group helped. It’s this sense of community that will help shift the perception of Georgia State, Atlanta, and its people. Claire is proud to say that she will continue to contribute to this shift.
Cultivating new ways to serve my community has been the biggest impact service has made in Claire and encourages her to constantly continue improving the conventions of what service is. Overall, the service projects Claire has been a part of in her time at Georgia State have been most meaningful to her because they’ve helped her to realize areas of need that aren’t being addressed. This led her, along with some other students, to co-create the Citizen Scholars Initiative which allows students to build outreach projects and programs from the ground up. Congratulations and thank you, Claire, we are excited to see what the future holds for you!
