Panther Breakaway is part of the national alternative breaks program, which organizes community service trips for college students during their winter, spring and summer breaks. Civic Engagement offers both international and domestic trips.
Students who are looking for a meaningful way to spend winter or spring break can join Civic Engagement and other students with a heart for service for a week of volunteer activities in cities across the southeast United States. The winter break trips from December 13-17, 2017 include race relations in Birmingham, Ala, poverty and income inequality in Miami, women’s issues in Knoxville, Tenn., and refugee resettlement in Jacksonville, Fla. The spring break trips from March 11-18, 2018 include urban education in New Orleans, immigration and the Latino community in Memphis, Tenn., public health and society in Orlando, Fla, disaster relief in a location that will later on be determined and our international trip for community building in Costa Rica.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The costs of the domestic trips are $250 for the winter trips and $300 for the spring trips, with each trip cost including all transportation, lodging and meals. Civic Engagement is currently accepting applications for site leaders for 2017-2018. Site leaders receive a $50 discount on the price of their trip. Students, faculty and staff to register and pay for Panther Breakaway alternative break trips online through Marketplace.
